Who are the volunteers & what are they doing at Bosco?

The Volunteers at Bosco Centre form part of the Youth Ministry Team. The volunteers serve for one year. Bosco Volunteers are expected to live and work as members of an active and prayerful team on behalf of young people. They are recognised as full-time members of the team for one year and are invited to bring their own unique skills and insights to bear on the planning and action of the apostolate which falls under the responsibility of the Bosco Diocesan Youth Centre.

The particular spirit in which all this is done is based firstly on the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and secondly in accordance with the mission of the Salesians of Don Bosco. The “Give-a-year-of-your-life” styled project, is considered a gift both to the work for young people and to the team members themselves. While it is hoped that the ministry of the Bosco Youth Centre will be enriched by the freshness and energy of the youth ministers, we also believe that they themselves will be enriched by new formative experiences, promoting their human and spiritual growth and a clearer vision of their own Christian vocation. Thus it is expected that they will gain as much as they give!

What will the Salesian Community at Bosco
will expect from you?

1. To grow as members of the team, sharing together ministry, recreation, and prayer.

2. To assume the work of the team diligently. This will involve the planning and preparation of retreats and other programs; active interest in the organizing and development of new youth resources; the co-ordinating of youth events, and regular evaluation sessions.

3. To work with young people, sharing with them at a personal level and helping them to relax, pray and benefit from their belonging to, and involvement in spiritual and educational experiences.

4. To travel occasionally to parishes and schools as part of the team's mission.

5. To engage in the process of ongoing personal and Christian development.

6. To participate in the nitty-gritty work of running the Centre.

7. To assist in administrative tasks and use all equipment and materials responsibly.

8. To be ready to substitute for any absent member of the team even at very sort notice.

9.To maximize daily contact with all groups visiting Bosco.

What will be the Commitment of the Salesian Community in respect of the Volunteers?

1. To provide a setting in which the Volunteers can feel at home, grow in faith and self-confidence and develop their gifts.

2. To provide initial formation during the first couple of weeks - induction period and in service training thereafter, particularly by means of collective reflection sessions.

3. To facilitate growth in personal human development.

4. To grant, at the end of the year, a testimonial of work experience gained for the purpose of future employment.
