XVth World Youth Day – Rome 10-20 August 2000
The Youth Department has set itself a minimum target of sponsoring 8 representatives – 1 from each region of the Diocese to participate in the WYD2000 I August 2000 at the invitation of Pope John Paul II to the young people of the world. These eight will be selected on merit, by April next year, for the contribution they will have made to date in the life of their parish and region. The eight regional reps will be sponsored to the tune of R5000 each and will have to raise approximately R1000.00 themselves to cover the balance. The minimum amount required per individual to cover their costs on this pilgrimage, is estimated at around R6000.00.
Relying on our fund-raising efforts at Youth Department level, we hope to have something left over to provide limited assistance to 24 others who also display commitment to their parish youth scene. The Vicar for youth, who will be accompanying the group as chaplain, is setting a target of being able to assist these 24 young people (not more than 1 per parish/movement) with almost a fifth of the cost; that is, One thousand rand.
To this end, we invite you to submit the attached nomination form to us, duly completed, by no later than the end of February 2000.
Criteria: The nominees
- must be between 18 and 29 years of age;
- must be committed and practicing Catholics
- must be able to obtain their own passport travel document in good time;
- must be nominated by a /some fellow parishioner(s) pupil(s) or movement member(s),
and supported by their parish priest, chaplain, principal or movement director.
This does not exclude any other young people from participating in the World Youth Day at their own expense. The World Youth Day with the Pope is open to all young people of the world. This nomination process concerns only those who desire some assistance in getting there, or those who would like to go as representatives of their region.
We therefore encourage as many young people as possible to join in this lifetime experience and fundraise for themselves or for a member of their youth group, youth movement or youth choir, in order to make it to the GMG (=World Youth Day in Italian) in Rome in August 2000.
