God does not examine us on our ability, but on our availability!
And God does not ask us to be successful, but faithful!
"Lifes too short to make the wrong choice!" This phrase frequently heard on a certain radio commercial, is extremely relevant to us all! When were young, we imagine we have many years ahead of us, so much so that we dont even bother making choices. We prefer to just go with the flow. And if older people give us advice, we say: "We want to learn by our own experience. Allow us to learn by our mistakes!" The trouble is that so many of us are making mistakes which are so serious they affect the rest of our life so badly, we regret it forever; and really its often too late to learn from mistakes. Its common sense to consult a map when we go somewhere we havent been before, or to ask someone who has been there. Lets not reject the guidance which those who have gone before us provide us with. Lets try to get things right first time, by making good choices, Godly choices. Lets admit that we dont have all the answers. Lets search for them together with God!

Youth Groups!
Is a parish youth group only for those who cant get a date on a Friday night, or those with nothing better to do on Saturday / Sunday afternoon. What makes it un-cool to go to the youth group at your parish? Ideally there should be several youth groups in every parish, to accommodate various interests, ages, although every group should aim to combine the spiritual and social - focus on faith and fellowship. It is foolish to insist that there be only one youth group or sodality in a parish. One size does not fit all! And as in Godzilla, size does matter! It is recommended that if your youth group has more than 30 members, then split it into two according to age groups or interests or preferred meeting times.
A letter from one of our readers: Dear Youth Office,
Hi my name is Lerato M. Im 17 years old and I attend HC Parish in Z. I wish to complain, that as a Catholic Teenager, there is nothing interesting for me in the church. There is a youth group in the parish, but Im not in it coz theres nothing interesting about it. I dont know its members even. Every Sunday I go to church and after Mass I come straight home. This is getting on my nerves. I think the youth commission should organise events, catholic youth gatherings, choir competitions and stuff like that. I attended a catholic school. Last year we had a chance to go to Pretoria to see Br. Mike Burkes play about Edmund Rice. It was a great inspiration. If I wasnt so fortunate to go to a catholic school like most youth, I would never have had that chance. Maybe there are other plays like that, but we never know about them coz nobody tells us. Please call me or write to me at the above address. I know this might be too hard on you. Im sorry but I cant help it!
Yours in Christ.
L.M. (Full name and particulars supplied and Lerato is offered R10.00 for her provocative contribution!) Would anyone like to respond to Lerato in the next issue?
Its so exhausting to be young!
Healthy teens are always tired, except at 23h00.
Oldies are able to dig up weeds, play tennis and cook supper for 5,
without complaining of being tired.
It seems to be a myth that youth is synonymous with energy.
No one is able to look as exhausted as a 16 year old when she got up at 10h30,
then spent an hour on the phone to her friend, before doing her nails
and then reading a bit of her latest "Blush" magazine.
The main thing to remember about teenagers
is that they permanently feel worn out
and whatever encouragement one makes
to motivate them out of wasting their precious youth,
only serves to make them cringe! So handle them with care!
How to get your issue of the Y-Link every month:
We distribute this news-sheet gratis by whichever means we can, especially through existing mail drops of the Bishops offices, through the Diocesan Youth Forum, by dropping off copies at every parish we visit and meeting we attend. We avoid doing it by means of the postal services because of the expense involved. We will e.mail it free of charge to all who request it. However, the e.mail version will not include the illustrations and cartoons which we include by means of a "scissors" job on the hard-copy. Those who do wish to be included on our snail-mailing list, need to request it in writing, and we would appreciate that you offer to pay for postage: = R20.00 per annum approx.
Please pass this news-sheet on to others once youve read it. There is no copy-right on it either; we encourage you to make as many copies of it as you like to distribute to all who may benefit from it.
10 Commandments for young people of the 90s
1. Don't let your parents down; they brought you up!
2. Choose your companions with care; you will probably become what they are.
3. Be master of your habits, or they will master you.
4. Treasure your time: don't just spend it, invest it!
5. Stand for something, or you will fall for anything.
6. Choose only a date whom you know will make a good lifelong mate.
7. See what you can do for others; not what they can do for you.
8. Guard your thoughts; what you think, you will become.
9. Don't fill up on this world's crumbs; feed your soul with living bread.
10.Give your all to Christ; he gave his all for you.

Applications
The Youth Department is glad to announce it has a new member of staff beginning from the 01/09/98! His name is Xola Nqono, and he is from Regina Mundi parish. He joins the team for one year of service in youth ministry. His name appeared in our last Y-Link, for he had just returned from a 6-month stay in Taize.
We invite applications for the next vacancy which will arise at the end of January 99. Applications are held over for each following round for as long as applicants wish to remain on our list of candidates; so those who have already submitted the necessary forms need not apply again. And by the way, the first and most important requirement of applicants is that they be already committed in the youth scene within their parish or region and have a proven track record of involvement with youth work!
Youth Bible College January 99 November 99
This is a unique experience open to 18-25 year olds who wish to grow in their knowledge of scripture and the faith, and obtain training in youth ministry. It will be a live-in course (Mon-Fri) Only 24 places available. Application forms available from the youth office, your parish priest or Sr Marie-Andre (011-837-3607 a.m. or 726-2136 p.m.)
Bosco Volunteers
The Bosco Youth Ministry team needs a number of volunteers for the year January December 99, to assist in running the various programs which take place at Bosco. It means giving a year of ones life for God a big sacrifice but in giving that year up, volunteers gain an immense amount in personal growth and life experience. If interested, contact Fr Farrelly at 011-9492360.
Parish Youth Group Manual
Are you short of ideas for ice-breakers and discussion topics to use in your youth group? You can find plenty of ideas in the revised and improved edition of the "Whatdowedonextweek" Handbook, first published in 1994 and out of print for the last two years and which is once again available from the Youth Office for the same unbeatable price as previously: R30. We also have copies of a number of youth manuals, chiefly from the USA and Europe, which can be borrowed. We hope to shortly be able to also provide some audio-visual materials for use by parish youth groups.
Also available from the youth office: "WWJD faith bands" (R6.00 each; R5.00 for orders of 10 or more), and "Ethnic Wire Crosses" like the one pictured on this page (R5.00 each; R4.00 for order of 10 or more).
Reports:
* Four parishes of the Kathorus (Katlehong, Thokoza and Vosloorus) area, East Region got together for a sports day the magnificent facilities of Huntersfield Stadium. They enjoyed basketball, netball, volleyball and soccer challenges, and despite a healthy competitive spirit between the teams, the main aim of the day to promote unity among the youth groups and friendships between the parishes was well achieved.
* The East Region also held a concert at Alberton parish hall on the 10/08/98. Apart from trying to raise some funds, the purpose of the day was to select the items which would represent the region in the Talent Parade" on the 24th September. However great fun predominated over any competitive spirit.
* North Region formation day: 02/08/98 5 (out of ten) parishes were represented for an enjoyable day filled with variety, including Rosebank Union Church praise and worship team who demonstrated the power of music in youth ministry and the Covenant Players who workshopped those present on how to use theatre to proclaim the message of the good news, concluding with the celebration of the Eucharist.
* Young adults: Responding to a call by Joseph Dube, about 80 Young adults got-together at the Cathedral on the 10/08/98 to reflect on their role in their parishes, in the church and in society. Young Adult groups are a growing phenomenon around the diocese! They still need to find their niche among the 19-35 age group, but in contrast to teenaged groups, apart from the moral support from the parish priest and ppc, they should for the most part, be self-sufficient
* At the office we hear of lots of wonderful things happening in various parish youth groups but we cannot invent reports for them. Please pass on the good news in writing for us to share them around the whole diocese, because good news is contagious and can inspire those who are struggling! The Covenant Players have been a big hit in several places with those who have invited them.
Growing Responsible a reflection
Growing is painful. Growing means learning and that entails changing. Learning a new thing means we must let go of the old things. To learn how to use Word 97, I had to give up what I did when using Word-Perfect 5.1. As we age, we would like to be a bit of every stage of life: children, youths and adults. Wed like to have the chance to drive a car, yet, like a child, be excused of any responsibility. But once I become a teenager, I have to leave behind the ways of a child; when I become an adult, I cannot remain a carefree teen. Ive got to sacrifice what I am for what I am meant to become. The inability to do this seems to be a mark of our times. In the past parents just bore children and bored teenagers. Now they seem to mainly board young adults, who find it difficult to leave their nest! Come on young adults! Become what you are!
