A few Thoughts for the month:

- Success depends on 1% inspiration; 99% perspiration.

- Failure is the result of putting wishbone where backbone should be!

- The Lord gave you two ends – one to sit on, the other to think with.

Your success depends on which you use most. Heads you win, tails you lose!

- You are not really successful until someone claims they sat next to you at school.

- Average pupils usually do just what is required of them; successful pupils do much more!

Editorial

"R160 to go on a retreat to Bosco!" "R40 to go to attend special church program!" "R5 to give to charity or put on the collection plate at church!" "No ways. I can’t afford that!" How often have you heard that sort of reaction. And yet, the same objectors to investing some of their cash into anything churchy or in favour of a charitable activity, are often capable of financing personal cellphones, fashionable clothing - including shoes worth R550 or more, expensive cosmetics, extravagant parties, expensive shows and have no difficulty financing their chain-smoking habit. How come?… How come so many have no difficulty blowing R8,000 just to go watch the rugby semi-final, while investing R1,000 in a child’s education is considered impossible. Why is it possible to find money for non-essentials, while it becomes impossible to find the equivalent for important matters. Even in the business sector: it’s amazing how easy millions of rands are available to build casinos, while old folks homes and hospitals struggle to keep going. Why oh why?

Perhaps its because of two mental viruses which are at least as harmful as HIV, if not more, because they kill the spirit, the soul, are spreading even quicker than the dreaded HIV. These two viruses have been identified as materialism and individualism. At least 95% of our population are reckoned to have been infected by them. Unless a radical antidote is found soon, our society is headed for a catastrophe! The only cure proposed so far are heavy doses of Faith, Hope and Love! These are impossible to find on our shop-shelves unfortunately and cannot be imported at any price. They have to be carefully cultivated in the garden of the heart from the seeds found in the Gospel. See ye who have eyes to see. Hear ye who have ears to hear. Act ye who have hearts to serve. []

A reflection to pray about!

The more people have, The more they have to loose!

The more they have to loose, The more fearful they become!

The more fearful they become, The more defensive they get!

The more defensive they get, The more they cut themselves off.

The more they cut themselves off, The more closed they get.

The result is that they end up with a withered heart.

And it is impossible to breathe life into a withered heart.

To close one’s heart is to begin to die.

To open one’s heart is to begin to live.

At the end of the day, it’s not what we carry

In our purses or bank accounts that matters most.

It’s what we carry in our hearts! Lord teach us these truths!

The Nothing People

They do not lie.
They just avoid to speak the truth.
They do not take.
They just find it impossible to give.
They do not steal.
They scavenge.
They do not rock the boat.
But you never see them pull an oar either.
They won’t pull you down,
But they’ll let you pull them up,
And let that pull you down.
They do not hurt you.
They will not help you.
They do not hurt you.
They merely do not love you.
They will not burn you.
They will simply fiddle while you burn.
They are the nothing people;
The sins of omission folk;
They’re neither hot nor cold;
They’re neither good nor bad
But that is why they are obnoxiously worse.

Exams! Life’s a beach? Life’s a jol? No life’s an exam!

Thabang Moeketsi, who is also writing exams this month, sends his greetings, appeals to all his fellow young believers to "make sure to make hay while the sun shines". Get your study time in now. Wasted time can’t be redeemed or bought back even by Bill Gates the richest man in the world! So don’t think – "Ag, I can try again next year!" Pass now! Life’s too short to waste any of it.

Diocesan Youth Forum meeting – Please Remember

The quarterly Diocesan Youth Forum meeting will be held at the Cathedral Hall on Saturday - 27/11/99 from 11h00 to 16h00. It is intended for leaders of their youth groups as well as adult animators of the parish youth scene, and any people in leadership positions in youth movements. Some refreshments will be provided.

The gathering will consist among other things, of some planning of 2000 diocesan youth events, some youth animation formation and exchange of ideas, and a time of prayer. Some useful hand-outs will be distributed too.

It is guaranteed not to be boring but fully interactive and experiential... and promises to be fun! If you can't make it, encourage someone else from the parish to attend. We would like a minimum of 1 and a maximum of 3 from every parish in the diocese. This serves an open invitation, but we would appreciate your letting us know (for catering purposes) whether you will participate in the Forum. We look forward to CU there! It should take priority in the diaries of any self-respecting youth leader or animator. Young-adults included!

Nominations for WYD

We presume many of you are keeping this on the agendas for discussion. Who are the most dedicated and self-sacrificing youthful contributors to the life of your parish especially in respect of youth activities. Those are the ones who merit being nominated. Nominations signed by the Parish priest and/or the PPC chairperson will obviously carry more weight than applications which are not! February the 29th will be the deadline for nominations to be submitted. So do not wait too long!

Please pass on this newsletter to anyone interested and make as many copies for redistribution as possible.

Listen up !!!!!!!!!! (Tim’s column!)

Strange but "tru". Neil Armstrong claims, that while on the moon, he heard sounds which he later learnt, in Arabic mean "Allah is the only God". Back on earth he embraced Islam and received a new name that means "sweet fruit".

Hundreds of Germans took on the Islamic faith after having discovered a message on a farm in Germany. This message is from the heart of the Koran & and can still be seen by looking at the line of trees in a certain way. It reads: "There is none other than Allah!"

In one of our Jozi townships, a girl claims, that after having cut a tomato in two, the inner veins lined up in a message that read: "No other but God!"

Remember! God said: "if you, my people, do not praise me, I will command the trees and the rocks to do so and they will obey."

So there you are, friends, a message from heaven in a fruit!

Well , c u next month when our hot topic will be around life out there !

Guides and Scouts

Benjamin and Isabelle Dubourg, our two scouters from France, who are a young married couple who have committed themselves to spend two years as "lay-missionaries" in our Diocese, finally landed on the 14th October and have begun making contacts and exploring the various possibilities to promote parish based scouting (by the way, we use the word scouting as inclusive of both the girl guides and boy-scouts) as a way to help especially our junior youth groups. Initially we are seeking committed adults and young adults who are prepared to undergo the necessary training to be the "cadres" (leadership team) in their parishes. All who are interested,

please contact Fr Francois at 402-0762 or Benjamin & Isabelle directly at 680-2738.

Bible College Applications for 2000.

If you have not noticed the posters and pamphlets at your parish of the Bible college’s advertising campaign, then you must be blind, or you never go to mass, or if you do, you never bother to read the notice-boards! And if really there is no sign of these around your parish church, then either they got lost in the post or your parish priest has them stored somewhere in the sacristy or presbytery. In this case, just ask him for the info. Spending a year at our Catholic Bible College might not guarantee you a job, but should help anyone who spends that year to feel much more empowered to live out her/his Christian vocation. The youth department will obviously also be interested in signing up those who have been through this formation year as assistants in the youth department.

In place of Games this month

here are some Fun-Fundraising ideas:

Coin Drop

Place a large "piggy-bank" in an accessible area in your church or youth room. Make up a sign that states what you are raising money for, and the instructions to drop off those unwanted coins that everyone has too many of. This is a great inexpensive way to raise funds for an event. Maybe make a crazy "machine" (like the game "Mouse Trap") that the coins will drop and roll through before they get into the jar/container to interest the kids and keep everyone giving.

Free Car Wash

Set up a youth car wash at a local shopping centre or school fete grounds, having obtained the required permission of course. However, instead of charging people, do it for free. Make it clear that there are no strings attached. However, those who wish to may make a contribution of any amount they choose. This money can then be used by the youth for a charity project. A sign/tickets could possibly read: Your car is being washed by the youth group from XXX Church for free with no strings attached. It's just one small way for us to demonstrate to you the love of Jesus Christ. Another way we are attempting to share this love is by collecting funds to help purchase food for the hungry. If you'd like to help us with this project, your contribution would be greatly appreciated. It is recommended that an eye be kept on younger youth so that they take it somewhat seriously and don't annoy the customers.

Silent Sunday

You need pledge sheets for each teen. They get pledges per hour. Between the Sunday morning and evening mass, the teens are not allowed to talk. Have them bring homework or a book to read. Every hour, give them a 5 minute break to go to the toilet and ask questions. If they talk during the quiet time, they lose their pledge for that hour. You need a few attentive judges!

Rockathon

(24, or at least 12 hour event) Each participant signs up sponsors for every hour he/she rocks on a rocking chair.

Rules: 1.) Everyone provides their own chair. 2.) Each participant must rock for at least 3 hours in succession. 3.) Time breaks only allowed for trips to the bathroom. 4.) The chair must be moving at all times. Hold the event in a large room and provide movies/TV, tape recorders for music, Coke, cookies, juice, etc. Have supporters to help keep people awake and moving. Keep track of times and money raised and announce it to kids as they go along to help motivate them.

"Seed Planting"

Collect "seed money" from various church members for this project. If at all possible, collect R10 - R20 per youth. Then, give each youth this "seed money" with the following instructions. Just like the parable of the talents, we are giving you this money with a simple request. Invest it. Make it grow. Do something resourceful with it. Then, after a specified amount of time (say 30 days), have a get-together where everyone brings their earnings in and donates it all toward the fundraising emphasis. When done correctly, this idea generates an incredible amount of ownership, creativity, and MONEY for your group. One idea that has worked successfully included home-made/recycled greeting-card business (great for Christmas!).

Walkathon

Have teens bring in the names and addresses of at least 10 people they know. They can bring more if they like. Develop a form letter describing your fundraiser, stating that "Tommy" gave their name in hopes that they would consider sponsoring "him" for the walkathon. Include a return envelope with the church's address on it, for the person to mail in their contribution. Explain in the letter the date for the fundraiser and that the teen who receives the most sponsors will receive a prize. The only work involved is mailing out the letters. There should be no hassle and hounding of teens to collect from the people whose names they brought in.

Your Idea of a good Friend!

Looking at life as God does is an exciting way to live.

Like Jesus, we must plan our lives in complete dependence upon God.

Our plans need to reflect God's character and His will for us.

Hear are a few tips on how to include God in planning our future:

Submit to God's sovereignty. This must be the starting point for all your planning. Making plans without submitting them for His review, correction, and approval is an act of arrogance on your part that God will not let go unchallenged.
Acknowledge that you are dependent. Everything you do depends on someone else. For example, if you make plans to fly to a certain city on a certain day and take care of some business, those plans depend on the airlines, the weather, the business climate, and a lot of other things you can't control. You are also dependent on God.
Rely on God's infinite knowledge. After all, he knows the end from the beginning. God knows what you don't know. He sees every factor, takes into consideration all possibilities, and gives you the best option. God will show you the best route. You may see many possible courses of action, but from His perspective God sees the best path for you to travel through life.
Defer to God's will as you plan. You need to say, Lord, these are my plans, but I subject them to your will because You are infinitely greater than I am. Since God's will for you is the expression of His infinitely perfect plan, you won't go wrong submitting your plans to Him. But if you leave God out, you may miss out on some blessing He wanted to send your way. You may also miss out on His protection from some danger if you are fixated on what you want.
God wants you to know His will. He wants you to test and prove His will. If you have a growing, intimate relationship with God, He is going to let you in on what He's doing with your life. He may bring you into situations that you never dreamed possible.
Honor God's holiness as you plan. The way you plan you life is a matter not just of intelligence or convenience, but a matter of holiness. To plan apart from God is sin. But as it is, you boast in your arrogance; all such boasting is evil. Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, commits sin (James 4:16-17). God is clear: Godless planning is not just bad planning - it is sinful, unholy planning.
