THE HOLY SPIRIT
"Come, Holy Spirit, come and
renew the face of the earth! Come with your seven gifts! Come, Spirit of Life, Spirit of
Communion and Love! The Church and the world need you. Come, Holy Spirit, and make ever
more fruitful the charisms you have bestowed on us. Give new strength and missionary zeal
to these sons and daughters of yours who have gathered here. Open their hearts; renew
their Christian commitment to the world. Make them courageous messengers of the Gospel,
witnesses to the risen Jesus Christ, the Redeemer and Saviour of man. Strengthen their
love and their fidelity to the Church."
Pope John Paul II May 30 1998
Come Lord, Set Us On Fire.
Clasp us close to your bosom. Seduce us with your beauty. Enchant us with your
fragrance. Let us love you.
Descend into my heart, O Holy Spirit,
and lighten the dark corners of this wretched dwelling place. Pierce the gloom, with your
joyful beams, dwell in that soul that longs to be your temple; water the barren soil,
overrun with weeds and thistles, making it fruitful with dew from heaven. O come, refresh
my faint and languid spirit. O come, guide this lost soul tossed about on the stormy seas
of this world, and bring me safely to the haven of your love.
St. Augustine of Hippo
Renewal
We have experienced the grace of a new
Pentecost. There are many signs of hope which have flourished for the mission of the
Church among which are the discovery and the appraisal of charisms
the
renewed zeal for evangelisation and the advancement of lay people. Pope John Paul
II, 1 March 1999, address to Pontifical Council
for the Laity
Evangelism
Of its nature the Church is
missionary. Evangelization is the proper vocation of the Church.
Matthew
28:19-20
"It is not enough to
discover Christ--you must bring Him to others! The world today is one great
mission land, even in countries of long-standing Christian tradition."
Pope John Paul II
Ecumenism
"United to Jesus Christ
by their witness in Africa, Catholics are invited to develop an ecumenical dialogue with
all their baptised brothers and sisters of other Christian denominations, in order that
the unity for which Christ prayed may be achieved, and in order that their service to the
peoples of the continent may make the Gospel more credible in the eyes of those who are
searching for God."

"Christianity
cannot be reduced to a doctrine, or simple principles," John Paul
II said today, alerting his listeners against a stagnant idea of
Christian life. In fact, the Holy Father added, "Christ, the
center of Christianity, is alive and his presence is the event that
constantly renews the human creature and the cosmos."
John Paul II said
that what characterized the "Cursillos de Cristiandad," as
well as similar ecclesial movements, "is the new evangelization
of adults." Over the past half century, these realities have
caused a genuine revolution in the Catholic Church: "The
Christian message is proposed through times of intense spiritual
experience, capable of making one rediscover the beauty of
encountering Christ and of being Church, as well as the joy of
fraternity and reciprocal service, permeating the whole of life with a
Christian spirit."
The demand of
integral Christianity -- that no reductions be made when it comes to
truth -- at the same time, knows how to measure itself against history
and modernity. It marked the whole of the last century and emerged
with force during Vatican Council II," the Holy Father added.
Thus the Pope explained the motive that gave life to these new
movements and communities, which on other occasions he has referred to
as a "springtime of the Spirit": "Through the
unfolding of what at times were dramatic events of the past decades,
the Church has understood ever more clearly that its task is care and
responsibility for men and women, not in the 'abstract,' but the
'real,' 'specific,' and 'historical.' The Church incessantly offers
Christ, the only Redeemer of humanity."
"In fact, only
in Christ, and the Church does not tire of repeating it, especially in
this Jubilee Year, can human beings find the real and full meaning of
their existence. Therefore, Christianity cannot be reduced to a
doctrine, or simple principles, because Christ, the center of
Christianity, is alive, and his presence is the event that constantly
renews the human creature and the cosmos. This truth of Christ is
vigorously proclaimed today, as it was courageously defended in the
20th century by so many witnesses of the faith and illustrious
Christian thinkers, among whom I am pleased to remember today Vladimir
Sergeevic Soloviev, the centenary of whose death we commemorate these
days." the Holy Father said.

"Go therefore, and
make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the
Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Teach them to carry
out everything I have commanded you. And know that I am with you
always, until the end of the world" (Matthew 28:19-20).
"In the presence of
God and of Christ Jesus, who is coming to judge the living and the
dead, and by his appearing and kingly power, I charge you to preach
the word, to stay with the task whether convenient or inconvenient -
correcting, reproving, appealing - constantly teaching and never
losing patience" (2 Timothy 4:1-2).
Christ, like a skillful
physician, understands the weakness of men. He loves to teach the
ignorant and the erring he turns again to his own true way. He is
easily found by those who live by faith and to those of pure eye and
holy heart, who desire to knock at the door, he opens immediately.
-- St. Hippolytus
The air which we breathe, the
bread which we eat, the heart which throbs in our bosoms, are not more
necessary for man that he may live as a human being, than is prayer
for the Christian that he may live as a Christian.
-- St. John Eudes

Every Christian Must Be a Missionary
Pope John Paul Message for World Missions Sunday VATICAN CITY,
JUNE 5, 2001
Every
Believer Should Be a Missionary, Pope Says
VATICAN
CITY, MAY 11, 2001 (Zenit.org).-
Every Christian believer, and not just those who take vows,
should become a missionary, John Paul II said today.
"All believers are called to 'prepare the way of the
Lord,' casting all fear and doubt aside," the Holy Father
told members of the Higher Council of the Pontifical
Missionary Works, who are in Rome for their annual assembly.
"Conscious of their own poverty," the Pope added,
"all are called to accept Christ's invitation to 'go out
to the world and preach the Gospel to every creature.'"
The directors and collaborators of the Missionary Works came
to the papal audience with Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe, recently
appointed Vatican director of the missions. The agency fosters
missionary awareness and sends personnel and materials to
promote evangelization around the world.
The Holy Father told the 114 national directors of the
Missionary Works that, following the Jubilee, it is necessary
to launch "a new missionary era." The salient
characteristic of this new era is that the mission is no
longer the monopoly of consecrated persons, he said.

Bishop. R Orsmond
The Holy Father appealed for a New Evangelization and the
Jubilee Year was part of that. But the work of evangelization
goes on. This new millenium calls for a new energy, a new thrust
for evangelization. I remind you of the words of Evangelii
Nunciandi, 'the Church exists to evangelize' and as the present
Holy Father says 'For the disciple of Christ to evangelize is an
obligation of love'.
Looking at our present situation I would have
to say, as do many others, that we are more into Church
maintenance than into church expansion or outreach or simply
direct evangelization. I can you say 'but we have no time'. True
but we are in the period of collaborative ministry whereby the
laity should have a deeper and more personal involvement in the
work of evangelization. They have to be empowered for their
share in the mission of Jesus. And many want to.
It is interesting to note that last November
the Holy Father presided over a Jubilee Congress in Rome on the
Lay Apostolate. 600 delegates from round the world attended and
their theme was "THE LAITY WILL BE THE MISSIONARIES OF THE
THIRD MILLENNIUM". It reinforces the need to help laity to
do what the Church expects of them. Remember that one of the
roles of the priests is to be a catalyst, to empower people and
create for them opportunities for the exercise of their
God-given gifts, and not to be an obstacle. [Read

The Catholic Archbishop of Vancouver has issued an invitation to
his clergy to attend a Catholic Alpha conference there in July, describing the course as
a most effective tool of evangelization. The Most Revd Adam Exner wrote,
Why am I inviting you to this conference? The Alpha course has been used in
may countries throughout the world and has proved to be a most effective tool of
evangelization. It gives us practical ways of sharing our faith with others: with
those who have never heard of Christ, with those who have fallen away from their faith,
with those who wish to grow into a deeper personal relationship with Christ and His
Church. The Great Jubilee of Christs Birth is a unique moment in the history of
the Church and of the world.Alpha could be one way for you to answer the call of the
Spirit to bring about the new Springtime of Faith and Christian Living desired by Pope
John Paul II and to help make your parish an evangelizing community.

Millennium: End
or Beginning?
Strip away the hype and hysteria
surrounding the Year 2000 and examine the Catholic view of the Millennium with Fr. Alfred
McBride. Drawing upon Biblical prophecy and teachings of the Holy Father, he shows how it
relates to end-of-time questions. His conclusions prove that, far from being the end of
time, the Millennium is a new beginning for humanity and a time of great growth for the
Catholic Faith.

Ministry:
Are you leading others to Jesus Christ?
My hope for all of the churches represented here is that our
churches will be places where people can encounter our Lord Jesus, where people can
experience personally the power of the Holy Spirit as a power which transforms - a power
which enables us and our people to be agents in going out and touching and transforming
the world around us.
